Getting to Know your Basenji

Getting to know your dog starts by getting to know its breed. At Kingdom of Pets, we keep a large database of detailed information on the appearance, personality, and health requirements of individual dog breeds. Here's what you need to know about the Basenji:

If your dog will have access to the kitchen and bathroom, it is a good idea to invest in a garbage can with a lid. This makes it much more difficult for your dog to get into the trash and cause a huge mess. If your dog is allowed in the kitchen, you should also make sure that you do not leave any food on the counter. Dogs will jump to surprising heights to get a snack, and certain foods can harm them. Onions and chocolate can be deadly to dogs. If you cannot keep your new pet out of the kitchen, make sure you keep the counter clear.Erecting a visible, or traditional dog fence is the most straightforward way for you to contain your dog.* Trindle (tricolor and brindle combination)If you do not want to erect a visible fence, either because of cost or aesthetics, you may consider using a hidden dog fence. There are two main types of hidden dog fences: wireless and underground. The cheapest and quickest way to make a dog fence is to use a snow fence. The holes on a snow fence will be small enough to prevent smaller dogs from escaping. If you live in a colder climate, however, you will know that snow fencing is unattractive. In addition, it can be easily bent out of shape, so it will require periodic maintenance. Nonetheless, if you are not troubled by the aesthetics, it will give you an effective fence in a pinch. To keep your dogs in your backyard, you are going to need a fence. Make sure that the fence is high enough that your dog cannot jump over it. If you do not like the look of a wood or chain link fence, you should consider installing an invisible fence. An invisible fence is an electric barrier that surrounds your yard. Your dog will wear a special collar. If your dog goes past the barrier, the dog will receive a small shock. Although this shock is unpleasant, it does not cause the dog too much discomfort. It usually only takes a few shocks for the dog to learn his boundaries. You can use your invisible fence or traditional fence to section off areas where you do not want your dog to go.The main advantage of hidden dog fences is that, quite simply, you dont have to put the time and money into building a fence. This also means you dont have to be concerned with meeting any zoning regulations. The disadvantage of hidden dog fences is significant, however: if your dog ignores the shock, there is nothing stopping it from leaving your property. Indeed, hidden dog fences will not work with dogs that are hard to train since getting to dog to stay within the perimeter is essentially a training process. And even the most perfectly trained dog might have enough reason one day to ignore the shock and run after something.* Tricolor (red, black, and white)HIDDEN DOG FENCESEvery dog needs exercised to be healthy. A dog chained in the backyard will not grow into the happy pet that you want. For this reason, it is important to use a dog fence to provide a secure space where your dog can run and play, safe from traffic and pedestrians.Other possible health risks include Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which is a form of degeneration in the retina, causing blindness, Coloboma, a hole in the eyes structure, Persistent Pupillary Membrane, which are small threads going across the dogs pupil, Malabsorption, an autoimmune intestinal disease, and Hip Dysplasia, which is a bone disease that causes symptoms similar to arthritis.VISIBLE DOG FENCESAnother importance consideration when erecting a visible dog fence is the types of fences allowed in your community by local zoning regulations.Being an extremely smart dog, the Basenji is easy to train, learning commands quickly. Other temperaments include being independent, funny, aloof to strangers, devoted to the master, and even mischievous. Keep in mind if you buy a Basenji that they love to run and they are exceptional climbers. Therefore, a chain link fence is not necessarily a good barrier. For many years, this breed almost completely disappeared but then in 1895 when the Europeans crossed over into the Congo, it was again discovered, becoming a favorite pet due to its high level of intelligence, speed, silence, and even courage. All of these special qualities made the Basenji a great help during wild game hunts. After being imported to the United States sometime in the 1930s, the Basenji became popular, which lead to the breed becoming a member of the American Kennel Club in 1943.Physical Appearance
